In a post today over at Blue Hampshire, Mayor Steve Marchand (Portsmouth-D) cited post-graduation public service as one reason for Monday’s endorsement of Governor Bill Richardson (NM-D).
On education, his plan heavily emphasizes providing incentives for attracting teachers into the profession, and reducing the cost of their education through post-graduation public service.
No stranger to the local National Service community, Mayor Marchand served as Co-Chair of cyzygy’07, City Year’s annual convention of idealism. He proudly touted his leadership in driving the conference locally as part of his Commitment to the Community in his campaign biography.
Happy to receive the endorsement, Governor Richardson said that he and Mayor Marchand “share a passion for public service.“ At tonight’s televised DNC Debate, Governor Richardson again reminded voters of his ambitious public service plan, which he rolled out last month. U.S. Senator Barack Obama (IL-D) also mentioned his support for National Service this evening when addressing education.
In other Presidential endorsement news, Honorary cyzygy’07 Co-Chair and U.S. Senator Judd Gregg (NH-R) decided to back former Governor Mitt Romney (MA-R), who served on City Year Boston’s Board of Directors during his time with Bain & Company.

It’s great to see Gov. Richardson getting attention for his public service education plan. It may not be as pressing as Iraq or health care, but the looming crisis in the public sector should be a major issue in this upcoming election.
I hope Gov. Richardson will join Sen. Clinton, Sen. Biden, and Gov. Huckabee in supporting the creation of the U.S. Public Service Academy. The Academy would be a “civilian West Point” that would offer students a free four-year college education in return for a five-year commitment to public service. It’s a grassroots movement that has captured the imagination of young folks around the country. Check it out:
